How does one begin the process of transitioning?

Question: I have been having a lot of trouble finding understandable information about Sexual Reassignment Surgery (specifically for FTM top surgery). What parts, if any, of the surgery are covered by OHIP? How does one begin the process of transitioning?

On June 3, 2008 the Province of Ontario issued Bulletin 4480, re-enlisting aspects of Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS) as insurable benefits under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). The bulletin states that SRS procedures will only be covered under OHIP with recommendation from the Gender Identity Clinic program operated by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto, Ontario. At this point it seems that CAMH is the only location in Ontario that can recommend the surgery.

Unfortunately, the bulletin is very vague in its description of coverage, but it seems to indicate that mastectomy (technical term for removal of breasts) would be covered. The Sherbourne Health Centre in Toronto operates an LGBT Health Clinic with programs specific to the Trans community. It is also home to Rainbow Health Ontario. Being qualified and experienced in the area of Trans Health, they may be able to provide more detailed information on the specifics of OHIP coverage and SRS process.

  • To find information about Sherbourne’s Trans programs and services:
    • Click the link to Sherbourne Health Centre homepage;
    • Choose “LGBT Health Care” from the menu on the left;
    • Choose “Trans health care” from the list of program in the main window, at the bottom.
