I recently turned 18 and I’ve been having some issues sexually. As a gay man, I don’t feel comfortable talking to my family doctor about them as he has been my doctor since I was born. Are there any gay-friendly doctors in Guelph or the surrounding area?
Thanks for asking about this! I think there are a couple of places in Guelph where you might be able to find what you’re looking for.
The first one that comes to mind is Guelph/Wellington Public Health, which provides sexual health services for all folks regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. You can call them toll-free at 1-800-265-7293 to ask a question about sexual health, or even make an appointment at their sexual health clinic.
Their hours of operation are Mondays and Fridays 10:00am – 4:00pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:00am – 6:30pm; they are closed on Wednesdays.
Guelph/Wellington Public Health’s sexual health clinic is located at 20 Shelldale Cres.
The AIDS Committee of Guelph (ACG) is also a place where you can get a gay-friendly and anonymous HIV test if you require one, you can give them a shout at (519) 763-2255
Their testing clinic is open on Wednesdays from 1:30-3:30 pm, and they are located at 89 Dawson Road, Unit 115.
If you’re a student at U of G, Student Health Services also provides great queer friendly health care (including sexual health and testing). Call 519-824-4120 ext. 52131 to make an appointment, or drop by in person to their clinic on the first floor of the JT Powell Building. They’re open Monday through Friday from 8:30am -4:30pm.
If you’re a non-student looking for more than testing or general sexual health services, you might have a harder time – it’s notoriously difficult to find a general practitioner in Guelph. Queer friendly doctors are out there, but whether they are taking on new patients is another matter.
I’ve put some feelers out and if I hear any good news, I will certainly post an update here. Be sure to check back periodically!
If you’d just like someone safe to talk to, know that OUTline is a confidential and anonymous sex-positive service. We can be there to listen and help you brainstorm ways to cope with relationship and sexuality issues, judgment free.
We’re open on Mondays, 3:30-6pm, Wednesdays from 6-9pm, and, starting on September 6th, we’ll be open on Fridays too from 1-3pm.
Give us a call!
