Are there a lot of gay guys at Guelph?
Thanks for your question!
The phrasing of your question makes me think that you’re wondering about U of G specifically, and I think the answer to your query must be YES!
There are almost 20,000 students on our campus, and if we use the old addage that 10% of the population is gay (more info on this below), we can guess that there are probably about 2000 queer or trans* students on our campus. Knowing that there are slightly more women-identified folk than men-identified folk at U of G, I’m going to guess that probably 40% of all students are male. If we extend that to this hypothetical number of non-hetero folks, that’s 800 gay guys. I don’t know about you, but 800 sounds like a lot to me!
Of course, I am legendarily bad at math. No doubt there are gaping holes in the statistical analysis presented above; but at the end of the day, there are a lot of people at U of G. And lots of people usually means lots of gay people – the reality is that we’re everywhere.
If you have more questions about this or want to talk to someone who knows what it’s like to be gay at U of G, why not give our fabulous volunteers a shout?

More info on statistics: The percentage of non-heterosexual people in any given population varies tremendously from study-to-study, some report that as few as 1% of a given population identify as homosexual, while others that adjust for homonegative bias report precentages as high as 20%. There’s really no way to know exact numbers – but as I said, when you have lots of people, you’re more likely to have gay people!
